AMD buys Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2bn in stock

The chipmaker is buying a world-model lab that it backed alongside Nvidia in February, and Li becomes its chief scientist. AMD frames the deal around its chip roadmap.

Key takeaways

  • AMD will buy World Labs in an all-stock deal worth about $8.2bn, closing by the end of 2026.
  • Fei-Fei Li becomes AMD’s executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Lisa Su.
  • AMD and Nvidia both backed World Labs’ $1bn round in February; AMD is now buying it.

AMD has agreed to buy World Labs, the spatial-intelligence startup founded by AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to chief executive Lisa Su. The deal was announced on Monday, Sept 28, and is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

World Labs builds models that “generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments” from text, image and video inputs. Its first product, Marble, is pitched for entertainment and for building simulated environments in which to train robots.

AMD’s explanation is about chips, not apps. “Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving,” Su said. The company says the World Labs team will “continue to focus on advancing AI model research”, and that the work will help shape AMD’s future technology roadmaps.

Take that at face value and it is a bet on timing. Chips take years to design, and a chipmaker that sees the next kind of workload early can build for it before rivals do. World models, software that simulates physical space, are seen as vital to putting generative AI on robots, from autonomous vehicles to general-purpose humanoids, as TechCrunch notes. Nvidia already offers a suite of open-weight world models under the Cosmos name, while AMD has offered only text- and video-based models to the public.

Its rival was an investor

Here is the detail most coverage left out. When World Labs raised $1 billion in February, its investors included both AMD and Nvidia, along with Autodesk, which put in $200 million. Bloomberg had reported in January that the startup was in funding talks at a valuation of about $5 billion.

The speed is worth pausing on. Li raised $230 million to launch World Labs in September 2024. Two years later, a company whose first product is pitched at entertainment and robot training is being bought for about $8.2 billion in stock.

Seven months later, one of those two chipmakers is buying the company. AMD’s announcement does not say how existing shareholders, Nvidia among them, will be treated beyond the all-stock structure.

AMD’s ties ran deeper than a cheque. The two companies formed an inference optimisation and training partnership last year, and Li was a guest at AMD’s CES presentation earlier this year.

The second chip-to-software deal in a month

On Sept 3, Nvidia agreed to buy Hugging Face, the platform where developers share open models, for $12.93 billion, with closing expected in the first half of 2027. An analyst quoted by Yahoo Finance at the time described Nvidia as becoming “much more of an AI platform rather than just a supplier of chips”.

The two deals come at the same goal from different directions. Nvidia is buying the place where developers find and share models. AMD is buying a lab that makes a new kind of model. Both suggest the biggest chip companies no longer want to wait and see what software ends up running on their hardware; they want a hand in shaping it.

For World Labs’ customers, the practical questions start now. AMD says the team will focus on research, which leaves open whether Marble stays a product that outside customers can buy or becomes mainly an in-house tool. Beyond regulatory approval, watch that, and whether AMD answers Cosmos with open world models of its own.
