Amazon opens Seller Central to Claude, but keeps Muse locked out
A new plugin lets Amazon sellers pull listings, inventory and sales data into Anthropic's Claude and act on them, with human approval. Three days earlier, Amazon told Meta's shopping agent it was not welcome.

Key takeaways
- Sellers can link Seller Assistant to Claude in about 60 seconds; the beta covers US stores.
- New 24/7 workflows handle restocking and pricing with audit trails; sellers approve actions.
- Amazon admits an outside agent on the seller side but blocks Meta's Muse on the shopping side.
Amazon on September 23 launched a Seller Assistant plugin that lets the independent merchants who sell on its stores run their Amazon businesses from inside Anthropic's Claude or Amazon's own Quick assistant. It is in beta for sellers in Amazon's US stores, connects in roughly 60 seconds with no code, and comes with a free year of Amazon Quick Plus for every primary account holder worldwide. GeekWire, which covered the announcement at Amazon's Accelerate conference in Seattle, described it as Amazon opening its seller tools to outside AI agents, starting with Claude.
The date is what makes this worth a second look. On September 20, Amazon began blocking Meta's Muse agent from shopping on its store. Three days later it invited a different company's agent into Seller Central. Both decisions are Amazon's to make. Together they say something about which agents Amazon wants around, and on which side of the counter.
What the plugin does
The plugin connects a seller's Amazon data, including listing contributions, real-time performance metrics, inventory levels and sales analytics, to the AI tool they already use, and brings Seller Assistant's reasoning, recommendations and ability to take action with it. New workflows run without the seller logged in: they monitor conditions and carry out routine tasks such as restocking and pricing adjustments, with full audit trails and guardrails the seller defines. Sellers choose whether a workflow only recommends or also acts, and "when it takes actions, sellers stay in control, reviewing and approving them before they're carried out." Prebuilt templates cover account health, order summaries, pricing trends and product expansion.
Amazon's numbers give a sense of the base it is building on. Seller Assistant has rolled out to more than 90% of selling partners worldwide in their own languages, has hundreds of thousands of active users, and its recommendations are accepted more than 90% of the time; separately, Amazon says 90% of its selling partners already use third-party AI tools. "Our vision was that they would never have to log into Seller Central," Mary Beth Westmoreland, Amazon's vice-president for worldwide selling partner experience, told GeekWire. "We would just bring it to them where they work."
The Quick side is Amazon's own agent for business. Jigar Thakkar, AWS's vice-president for agentic AI for business, says it gives sellers "a powerful context-backed agent to help them run their entire business more efficiently"; the free Quick Plus year is available through December 31, 2026, and a primary account holder can add two co-workers. On the Anthropic side, Eric Burns, the company's field CTO, said sellers "make dozens of decisions a day on pricing, inventory, and ads".
Open for sellers, closed for shoppers
Amazon's statement on Muse said agents that make purchases on behalf of customers "should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate"; its own Buy for Me feature, which shops on outside brand sites, identifies itself and lets those sites opt out. Read alongside the plugin, the rule is consistent: an outside agent is welcome when it comes through a door Amazon built, under Amazon's audit trail, on Amazon's terms. What differs is who the agent works for.
Here is our reading. On the seller side, an agent that helps merchants list more, price better and buy more advertising adds to Amazon's revenue and competes with nothing Amazon sells. On the shopper side, an agent that compares prices for a consumer sits between Amazon and the customer, and could route around Amazon's own advertising and its Rufus assistant. Amazon lost its preliminary injunction against Perplexity's Comet browser on August 4, when the Ninth Circuit held that users, not AI companies, control access to a computer, so the shopper-side wall may not hold in court. The seller-side door costs Amazon nothing and shows that it is not anti-agent, only anti-agents-it-does-not-control.
Why Claude first
Amazon has invested billions in Anthropic and sells Claude through its Bedrock service. Amazon says the plugin launches "in beta with Claude, with more integrations to follow", but names no others. The obvious next candidates are the assistants sellers actually use, and the retailers Muse signed up at Meta's Connect event on September 23, Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora and Wayfair among them, show how quickly the agent-commerce map is being drawn.
What to watch
Whether ChatGPT or Gemini get the plugin, and on what terms. When international sellers get access. What Quick Plus costs once the free year ends. Whether the plugin ever gains the power to make purchases. And whether Meta and Amazon find terms, or whether the Muse standoff goes back to the Ninth Circuit's reasoning.
